CHAIR OF ASEAN: MALAYSIA EARNEST TO STRENGTHEN REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP - TIONG
MELAKA, Oct 23 (Bernama) — Malaysia is eager to strengthen its regional partnership as it takes the Chair of ASEAN next year said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Tiong said through the partnership, it will enhance collaborative tourism initiatives, promote greater connectivity and economic growth throughout Southeast Asia.
“(As an example) MOTAC will continue to form strategic partnerships and collaborations with international airlines to boost promotions and stimulate travel demands.
“Our main aim is to position Malaysia as a global tourism destination,” he said in a speech during Inaugural Scoot Flight From Singapore to Melaka at Melaka International Airport (LTAM) Batu Berendam here today.
Also present was Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Exco Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad and Scoot Pte Ltd chief commercial officer Calvin Chan.
Tiong said from January to September this year, Malaysia received a total of 18.4 million international tourists, marking an increase of 27.0 per cent in comparison to the same period in 2023.
He said this achievement reflects the success of Malaysia tourism strategies which prioritise sustainable economic growth while ensuring the well-being of its communities.
“(Meanwhile) From Singapore, Malaysia received a total of 6.5 million arrivals from January to September 2024, which translates to a 10.2 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023.
“This growth underscores Malaysia’s status as a preferred destination for our close neighbours and our commitment to the values of partnership and shared prosperity,” he said.
