KUNMING (China), Nov 8 (Bernama) -- Youths play a critical role in shaping the future of ASEAN-China relations, with their potential seen as a driving force for societal change and the strengthening of regional ties.

The Consul-General of Malaysia in Kunming, Muhamad Akmal Abdul Wahab emphasized that young people are not only crucial for national and economic growth but also serve as essential links in fostering closer ASEAN-China relations.

“Youths are the future, young people possess immense power to shape society and drive positive change. They are not just pillars of national and economic development but also the bonds that strengthen ASEAN-China relations,” he said in his speech at the China-ASEAN ‘Gen Z’ Youth Festival and Cultural Exchange Activity, here today.

On Oct 11, Laos officially handed over the chairmanship of ASEAN to Malaysia during the closing ceremony of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Vientiane.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received the ASEAN Chairmanship gavel from Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, marking the symbolic handover of the role.

Muhamad Akmal also stressed the importance of fostering understanding and trust between ASEAN and Chinese youth, especially in today’s challenging era.

“Bringing young people together through cultural exchanges deepens their understanding and trust of each other’s cultures and values. Events like this festival provide essential opportunities for mutual learning and collaboration among the youth,” he added.

Meanwhile, President of the China Public Diplomacy Association Wu Hailong expressed hope that this programme would encourage greater understanding and integration between the people of ASEAN and China.

“I believe youth are a crucial force in promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN, and they are also the future of bilateral relations,” he said before officiating the festival.

The festival, themed “Promoting Cooperation through Cultural Exchange for Shared Growth and Friendship”, runs from today until Nov 10 and involves students from ASEAN countries.

Activities include a basketball friendship match, tours, a grand youth gathering and a food and culture carnival.
