KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) --  Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has emphasised the importance of handling the ongoing Myanmar crisis with care to prevent it from escalating further.

He also stressed the need for precision in addressing the issue, noting the complex nature of the conflict, which involves multiple factions with different agendas.

Speaking during the Minister’s Question Time in Parliament on Thursday, he highlighted that while Malaysia and ASEAN leaders continue to support the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), the situation in Myanmar requires a delicate approach, including negotiations with various parties through separate, individual meetings.

On a related development, the Foreign Minister said ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy to Myanmar, Tan Sri Othman Hashim, has begun his duties and is currently in Myanmar to meet with various parties involved.

The minister said that, additionally, the Troika mechanism, introduced during Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023, continues to play a pivotal role, with Malaysia acting as the current Chair.

Mohamad also mentioned the positive outcomes from efforts with China, including a ceasefire agreement signed between the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Myanmar junta.

However, he reiterated that significant challenges remain and must be addressed through careful and strategic engagement.
