ASEAN TO LOOK INTO NUCLEAR ENERGY POTENTIAL AS CLEAN, STABLE ENERGY SOURCE
KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 (Bernama) -- ASEAN countries are examining the prospects of nuclear energy as a clean and stable source of electricity, with the potential to replace fossil fuel-based generation sources and support the regional energy transition agenda.
In a statement today, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said the matter was a follow-up to the outcome of the 15th Nuclear Energy Cooperation Sub-Sector Network (NEC-SSN) Meeting and related meetings held from April 28-30, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur.
The meeting, organised by PETRA with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and chaired by the Philippines, involved representatives from ASEAN members, both in person and online, including Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia as the host, as well as Timor-Leste as an observer.
“Among the topics discussed were proposed areas of focus for the formulation of strategies and action plans that will be implemented through the Civil Nuclear Energy (CNE) sector under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026-2030 and will be presented and considered during the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy (SOME) in June 2025 in Kuching, Sarawak,” it said.
At the same time, the ministry said the meeting also evaluated the list of potential activities that could be implemented under the CNE sector, which would be targeted under the APAEC 2026-2030.
Additionally, PETRA said discussions were also held with dialogue partners and international organisations such as the Korea Nuclear Association, ASEAN Business Council, Integrated Support Centre for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security, Japan Atomic Energy Agency and the Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership which will help ASEAN develop the nuclear energy landscape in the region.
“Through this regional collaboration, Malaysia and ASEAN countries demonstrate their commitment to finding long-term solutions to energy challenges, in line with the aspirations of MADANI Malaysia in building a more sustainable and secure future for future generations,” he said.
