BANGKOK, July 8 (Bernama) -- The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related meetings is an important opportunity for Thailand to advance regional and international issues in collaboration with ASEAN member states and dialogue partners.

In a statement on Tuesday, Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, who is already in Kuala Lumpur, said he will hold bilateral talks with Vietnam and the Philippines to enhance trade cooperation and address regional issues.

The AMM begins today and runs until Friday.

Over the course of the week, Maris is scheduled to participate in more than 20 meetings to promote six key priorities: strengthening ASEAN centrality and unity amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics; enhancing economic and digital cooperation; supporting sustainable development; promoting human security; and reinforcing ASEAN’s role in addressing the situation in Myanmar, particularly through the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

Touching on the AMM-Post Ministerial Conferences (AMM–PMC), the Foreign Minister noted that it will provide opportunities for bilateral discussions with his counterparts from various countries to explore avenues for cooperation and to exchange views on regional and global developments.

Maris also shared the outcome of his bilateral meeting with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bui Thanh Son.

He said the two sides discussed follow-up actions from the then Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s visit to Vietnam in May, during which both countries agreed to elevate their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“This will be advanced through existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTC) and the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC),” he said.

Both ministers agreed to expedite the formulation of an action plan to deliver concrete outcomes, particularly in areas of shared interest such as high technology, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors, identifying key private sector players to lead the efforts.

Maris also held bilateral talks with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, expressing Thailand’s full support for the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026.

The two sides also discussed promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation through the Joint Trade Committee (JTC) and strengthening collaboration on food security.

The 58th AMM and related meetings, held under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025 with the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, will comprise 24 ministerial-level meetings involving ASEAN Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners.

The four-day high-level events are expected to bring together around 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) participants, Sectoral Dialogue Partners, and senior officials from the ASEAN Secretariat.
