ABIM CONDEMNS GENOCIDE IN DARFUR, URGES STOP TO RSF BRUTALITY IN SUDAN
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) expressed its concern towards the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, specifically in Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur Utara that reportedly was the site of a massacre by Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Its president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said a report by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Office and Human Rights Watch showed more than 15,000 civilians were killed in Darfur since the conflict flared again in 2023 while over 10 million Sudanese have fled the country.
He pointed out that the crimes in Darfur clearly met the definition of genocide under the Genocide Convention of 1948, speficially against the Masalit and Darfur African groups targetted based on their ethnic identities.
“ABIM also demands the immediate intervention of the UN, the African Union and the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) to stop the RSF operations and protect civilians in Al-Fashir and throughout Darfur,” he said in a statement today, adding that comprehensive sanctions should be imposed on any country, entity or individual channeling funds, weapons and military support to the RSF.
ABIM also demanded that humanitarian agencies be given unfettered access to famine areas and pressed for an independent international investigation under the International Criminal Court (ICC) to charge all perpetrators of crimes of war and genocide.
Ahmad Fahmi said Malaysia, through Wisma Putra, needs to play an active role in supporting the emergency resolution in the UN and to bring the issue to ASEAN and the Islamic world in line with the Malaysia MADANI commitment.
“The Sudan government also has a legal duty to stop attacks against its people. Ethnic killing should not be allowed to continue or normalised in international relations,” he said.
ABIM, through its humanitarian agency, Global Peace Mission (GPM) Malaysia has launched an aid campaign for Sudan on pedulisudan.com to support rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of victims.
