GRS takes over Sabah government with simple majority

27/09/2020 01:30 AM

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 26 -- Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) won the 16th Sabah state election with a simple majority today to take over the state government from Warisan.

GRS won 38 seats, just one more than the 37 required for a simple majority in the 73-seat State Legislative Assembly.

GRS’ seats came from Perikatan Nasional (17), Barisan Nasional (14) and PBS (seven).

Election Commission chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh, when announcing the full results of the election, said Warisan has 29 seats; PKR, two; UPKO, one; and Independents, three.

This gives Warisan Plus, comprising Warisan, DAP, PKR and UPKO, a total of 32 seats.

As of 1 am, GRS had not decided who will become the chief minister as the matter was still being discussed.

There has also been no word on the ceremony for swearing in the new chief minister.

The election was held after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal announced the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on July 30, one day after his predecessor Tan Sri Musa Aman claimed to have obtained majority support to form a new government.

“As the Sabah BN chairman, I would like to extend my profound thanks to the people of Sabah for the trust given us to shift from the rule of Parti Warisan Sabah.

“GRS is discussing our direction and other problems, and we will ensure that the new government is transparent and continues to protect the people of Sabah,” Bung Moktar told a press conference here

In the state election, held amid the COVID-19 pandemic, 66.6 per cent of the 1.12 million eligible voters cast their ballots to elect representatives for the 73 seats in the State Legislative Assembly.

Former chief ministers Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat of LDP and Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak of BN were among the 447 candidates from 15 parties who contested in the polls.

Salleh, who lost in the Kota Belud parliamentary seat in the 14th general election, captured the Usukan state seat this time in a three-cornered fight.

Sabah BN chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin won the new Lamag seat while Sabah Bersatu chief Datuk Hajiji Noor and STAR president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan retained the Sulaman and Tambunan seats respectively.

However, Chong lost in a 10-way contest in Inanam while UPKO president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and USNO chief Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia were defeated in Kiulu and Pintasan respectively.
